A question that’s always asked.
Well, here at RBP we love to answer these questions. So here is the top 10 list of the wealthiest rugby players in the world, according to yearly earnings and their contracts.
10) Jamie Roberts
The Welsh and newly signed Harlequins centre earns a reported £380,000 a year. Not a bad pay day at all!
9) Bakkies Botha
This infamously dirty Springbok and Toulon Lock earns £389,000 a year to stick his head between two fat front rowers. Not paid enough to do that in my opinion.
8) Thierry Dusatoir
The first French player on our list. The French Captain gets a reported £408,000 a year.
7) Morgan Parra
This Clermont and France flyer earns £436,000 per year.
6) Bryan Habana
Regarded as one of the fastest rugby players ever to grace the field, The South African winger playing for RC Toulon earns £474,000 a year.
5) Johnny Sexton
This Racing-Metro 10 who is on his way back to Irish shores and the famous Blue jersey is earning a reported £494,000 on his new IRFU contract.
4) Sam Burgess
Yeah. This guy. The Highest forward on the list. This ex South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league player, turned Bath rugby union centre/back row, is earning somewhere in the region of £500,000 a year.
3) Leigh Halfpenny
The kicker that doesn’t miss. This Wales, B&I Lions and RC Toulon Fullback is earning a reported £600,000. He came close to having this contract axed though!
2) Matt Giteau
This Aussie Centre is on £700,000 down in Toulon. Hopefully with these new rules with the Wallabies over-sea players, we’ll get to see him in a gold jersey once again.
1) Dan Carter
No surprise really. The All blacks 10 and quite possibly the most known rugby player world wide is on a £1,000,000 contract when he moves to Paris after the RWC to play for Racing Metro 92.
To put this into context on how low rugby players are paid, here’s Lionel Messi. He’s a striker/Attacking Midfielder for Argentina and Barcelona.
Last year he earned £49,000,000… excluding endorsements.
C*nt.
