A Belgian rugby club has surely set a new record for the largest win recorded in the magnificent game – a whopping 356 – 3.. WHAT?!
The match, which saw Royal Kituro take on Soignies in the Belgian top division, got off to a horrible start when the referee didn’t show up on time. After a while, the players of the Soignies side got annoyed and, assuming the game had been called off, travelled home. An hour after the scheduled KO, the ref appears, with only 16 Away team players remaining. Royal Kituro then proceeded to run in 56 tries and 38 conversions, to the 1 Soignies Drop goal… I suppose 3 looks a bit better than zero!
When asked, Soignies president, Guy Calomme, described the result as ‘Catastrophic’.
Footage of the game shows the away team allowing the opposition to run past them uncontested and repeatedly touch down under the posts. Previous meetings of the clubs have not been that close, with Royal Kituro winning 80-7 in the last encounter.
The away team were effectively forced to play and gain the ‘loser’s point’, rather than forfeit the match and earn no points at all.
And despite Royal Kituro’s hammering of Soignies, the losers still sit above the Kituro in the league by one point.
Soignies occupy third place in the table, although they now have a points difference of minus 264.
